Discover Mid Wales: Top Day Trips from Coety Bach

Explore the Heart of Mid Wales

Staying at Coety Bach puts you in the perfect spot to explore some of Mid Wales's most beautiful and iconic destinations. From breathtaking landscapes to charming towns, there’s something for everyone. Here are a few of my personal recommendations for day trips that you might enjoy during your stay.

The Brecon Beacons National Park

Just a short drive from Coety Bach, the Brecon Beacons offers a chance to stretch your legs and take in some stunning scenery. Whether you fancy a hike up Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, or prefer a gentler walk around the many trails, there’s plenty to choose from. If you’re like me, you’ll want to bring your camera. If you are lucky enough to visit on a clear day, the views are incredible, especially early in the morning or later in the day. For the more adventurous, there are activities like caving and horse riding.

Highlights:

  • Pen y Fan hike

  • Waterfall walks near Ystradfellte

  • Stargazing in the International Dark Sky Reserve

Hay-on-Wye: The Town of Books

If you love books then you’ll adore Hay-on-Wye! It’s a lovely little town, perfect for a wander. The bookshops are brilliant, and there are some great spots to stop for a coffee or a bite to eat. I always enjoy a walk along the River Wye when I visit, and the recently restored Hay Castle is well worth a look too.

Highlights:

  • Browse the famous bookshops

  • Visit Hay Castle

  • Walk along the River Wye

The Elan Valley

The Elan Valley is one of my favourite places to visit when I need a bit of peace and quiet. The reservoirs are absolutely stunning, and there’s something really calming about being surrounded by such dramatic landscapes. Whether you’re walking, cycling, or just enjoying the views, it’s a wonderful spot. The visitor centre has everything you need to plan your visit.

Highlights:

  • Scenic drives and cycling routes

  • Wildlife spotting

  • Picnic areas with stunning views

Llandrindod Wells

For a mix of history and relaxation, Llandrindod Wells is a great choice. The Radnorshire Museum is a lovely way to learn a bit more about the area’s past, and the Lake Park is perfect for a gentle stroll. If you’re visiting in August, the Victorian Festival is a real treat, it feels like stepping back in time.

Highlights:

  • Radnorshire Museum

  • Lake Park

  • Victorian Festival (August)

Builth Wells

You don’t have to go far for a lovely day out. Builth Wells, just down the road, has some lovely riverside walks, little shops, and friendly pubs. It’s also home to the Royal Welsh Showground, which hosts events throughout the year, including the well-known Royal Welsh Show in July.

Highlights:

  • Riverside walks

  • Local shops and cafes

  • Events at the Royal Welsh Showground
