Welsh Dark Skies Week 2025

A Celestial Celebration

When was the last time you really looked up at the night sky? Not just a passing glance, but a proper, awe-inspiring moment where you stopped and took it all in? Well, now’s your chance. Welsh Dark Skies Week 2025 is just around the corner, running from Friday, February 21st to Sunday, March 2nd, and it’s the perfect excuse to wrap up warm, step outside, and lose yourself in the wonders above.

Wales is home to some of the darkest skies in Europe, making it a paradise for stargazers. With several Dark Sky Reserves and Dark Sky Parks, including the Cambrian Mountains and Elan Valley, it’s one of the best places to see the Milky Way, distant planets, and even meteor showers. These protected areas limit light pollution, helping both wildlife and visitors enjoy the beauty of the night sky in its purest form.

What’s Happening?

This year, among other events across Wales, there’s a Cambrian Mountains Stargazing Weekend (February 28th – March 2nd) packed with incredible events for space lovers, casual stargazers, and anyone who just enjoys a good excuse to get outside at night.

For full event details and how to get involved, head to the Discovery in the Dark website.

Why Do Dark Skies Matter?

There’s more to dark skies than just stunning views – they’re vital for wildlife too. Artificial lighting is disrupting nature in ways we don’t always see.

  • Insects – Many bugs navigate using natural light from the moon and stars. When artificial lights interfere, it can throw them off course, reducing populations that birds, bats, and other creatures rely on.

  • Birds – Some species migrate at night using the stars for guidance. Too much artificial light can disorient them, sending them off course or exhausting them before they reach their destination.

  • Ecosystems – Light pollution messes with natural sleep cycles, breeding patterns, and even hunting behaviours. When one species struggles, the whole ecosystem feels the impact. If we want to keep our countryside teeming with life, protecting our dark skies is a step in the right direction.

Stargazing at Coety Bach

We are located in the Mid Wales where there is minimal light pollution

Lucky for us, Coety Bach sits just outside a designated Dark Skies area, meaning you can experience the magic of the cosmos from the garden. On a clear night, you’ll see millions of stars, planets drifting across the sky, and if you’re lucky, even the glow of the Milky Way.

There’s nothing quite like sinking into the wood-fired hot tub, glass of wine in hand, watching shooting stars dance overhead. Whether you’re here for Welsh Dark Skies Week or just fancy a romantic break under the heavens, our cosy cabin is the perfect place to switch off and soak it all in.

Check out our cosmic Stargazers bundle to help keep you stay warm and cosy whilst looking up at the dark sky!

How You Can Help Protect Dark Skies

Want to do your bit? Here are a few easy ways to make a difference:

  • Use Dark Sky-Friendly Lighting – Lights that are fully shielded and point downwards stop unnecessary glare and skyglow.

  • Only Light What’s Needed – Outdoor lights should be switched off when not in use – motion sensors or timers can help.

  • Spread the Word – Talk about light pollution, support local efforts to reduce it, and encourage friends and family to embrace the dark.

It’s small changes like these that help keep our skies clear for generations to come.

So, what do you reckon? Fancy a bit of stargazing? If you’re staying with us during Welsh Dark Skies Week, we’d love to hear about your celestial discoveries! Share your thoughts and photos – we’re all ears.
